Most of a great paint job happens before the lid comes off the can. Good preparation and the right applicators deliver smooth, lasting results.
Prepare the surface
Clean walls with a mild detergent, fill holes with spackle, sand smooth and wipe away the dust. Protect floors with drop cloths and mask trim with a quality painter’s tape, pressing the edge down firmly for crisp lines.
Choose the right applicator
- Brushes: an angled sash brush for cutting in edges and trim.
- Roller covers: short nap for smooth walls, longer nap for textured surfaces.
- Paint sprayers: fast, even coverage on fences, decks, cabinets and large rooms.
Technique
Cut in first, then roll in a “W” pattern while keeping a wet edge. Two thin coats always look better than one heavy coat; respect the drying time on the label between coats.
